Nashville, Season 1

Sylvia Jefferies as Jolene Barnes and Connie Britton as Rayna Jaymes.

Sylvia Jefferies as Jolene Barnes and Connie Britton as Rayna Jaymes.

Every week in?Slate?s?Nashville TV club, Katy Waldman will have an IM conversation with a different?Nashville?fan. This week, she rehashes episode 1.11 with June Thomas,?a Slate culture critic.

Katy Waldman: Hey there, June! I hate to start with the last scene, but I?m so glad circumstances have finally thrown Deacon, Juliette, and Rayna together in a confined space.

June Thomas: And at the crack of butt, no less.

Waldman: With Deacon as Juliette?s new guitarist, the Red Lips/White Lies tour seems destined to become the hot, melodramatic mess we?ve long hoped it would be. But what were your impressions of tonight?s episode?

Thomas: I feel a bit churlish saying this, since You Win Again had very few of the plot threads that bore me (For instance, Rayna's daddy?OK, pretty much everything except Rayna, Juliette, and Deacon), but my enjoyment was a little marred by the episode?s ridiculous on-the-noseness. I mean, it's enough to show Liam and Callista doing their best impression of the snake in the Garden of Eden, tempting Rayna to try something new. They don't also need to turn Liam into a patchy-facial-hair-twirling bad guy who states flat out that Edgehill is like her marriage, "stale, old, and boring." Give us a little credit, bad boy.

Waldman: I knew Liam was naughty, but I was surprised and saddened to see him become a straight-up adversary. He seemed more interesting as a bargaining chip, or a prize for Juliette and Rayna to wrangle over. (Some critics even thought he?d make a good love interest for Juliette!) And I agree that the parallel between Rayna?s marriage and her career at Edgehill felt too easy, as did Liam?s equation of ?stable? with ?stale.? Which one is Teddy, do you think? Marshall Evans?

Thomas: Those two, Marshall and Teddy, are only bad for Rayna in that they limit her future options. She'll be just fine if she sticks with them both. It's unpredictable, melancholy dudes like Deacon and Liam that have the potential to burn down her beautiful house. I'm sorry that Liam messed up Rayna's potential alliance with Callista. Rayna spends so much time dealing with people who are at very different places in their lives (Juliette looking at Rayna's longevity with contempt, Deacon looking at her happy home life with envy, and Teddy being such a drain on her) that I liked the idea of those bread-winning moms each supplying the thing the other needed.?

Waldman: I wonder whether this TV Club hasn?t overlooked friendship as a major theme on Nashville. More than a love interest, so many characters seem to need at least one true, loyal friend who has their best interests at heart. Even the main romances on the show are grounded in a deep sense of companionship?with desire functioning, sometimes, as a damaging complication.

Thomas: Well, Scarlett and Gunnar tested out another kind of alliance this week, when they joined up with TJ and the rest of Avery's old band. They formed with the explicit intention of winning one for the good guys. They're like the Justice League with guitars.

Waldman: Yes! It?s the Super Friends vs. Avery, the narcissistic loner.

Thomas: They love to play with duality in this show--even though we know that Rayna and Juliette are actually sisters under the skin, for the moment we're supposed to see them as polar opposites. So maybe Avery's the other side of friendship?

Waldman: Back that truck up. What makes Rayna and Juliette so similar, besides profession?

Thomas: Rayna and Juliette both have a difficult, damaged relationship with a parent. They're both shouldering more responsibilities than is fair. They're both single-minded, hard-working, charismatic, and of course talented. At first I thought the path the series was taking was leading Juliette to accept Rayna as a mother figure. Now I think the path is toward recognizing each other's shared qualities.

Waldman: Another thing Rayna and Juliette have in common is a fierce sense of independence: Neither wants to be beholden to anybody! That said, Juliette's animosity toward Rayna has always puzzled me. For someone as savvy as she is, wouldn't it make more sense to play nice with a reigning country music queen? I wonder if her mommy issues have affected the way she relates to musical "mother" figures?the women who paved the way for her career.

Thomas: It would be one thing if we made life choices based on cold calculation, but this is the emotional world of country music. Juliette definitely has some major mama issues, yet she's also blinded by pride. She clawed her way up to the top without anyone else's help; she doesn't need to play nice to the queen of Belle Meade.

Speaking of her real mom, I found the rapprochement between Juliette and Joleen tonight surprisingly moving. As a good Brit?a working-class Brit, to boot?I was so glad to see class make an appearance. I?ve been thinking for a long time that Juliette?s issues with her mom aren?t only about the pain her mom?s addiction has caused, but also that Juliette is embarrassed by her mom?s inability to fit in with the middle and upper-class folks that Juliette mingles with these days.

Waldman: It will be interesting to see if improvements in the Juliette-Joleen relationship translate into some sort of detente for Juliette and Rayna. But yeah, I agree with you about the class dimension. Perhaps that?s why Deacon was so wise to link himself to Joleen when he spoke to Juliette. He forced her to confront that the musical hero she so wanted in her band had a lot in common with her mortifying mom.

Thomas:?Yes! Juliette knows how to read Deacon, whereas she's too close to see her mom clearly, but he made that connection. And it was almost as though Joleen allowed Juliette to see all the hurdles she'd had to leap over to get to where she is today. That was really lovely.

Waldman: Right, and in Juliette?s eyes, Rayna never had to lift a finger for her stardom. She?s just hanging around gobbling up all this unearned attention. (I love jealous Hayden Panettiere!)

Thomas: Juliette thinks it's time for Rayna to retire her tour bus and leave the business to the next generation. Sometimes I think Rayna would like that, too, but her family needs the money that only her music career can generate. And with Teddy's in public office, that need isn't going away any time soon.

Waldman: True. Songwriting is still very much a job for all of them (with the possible exception of Gunnar and Scarlett, for whom it's basically foreplay. I kid, sort of.) Nashville is so interesting in that it doesn't sentimentalize music?it's a show about the music?business?but the songwriting and the performances are also so genuine, often the most emotionally affecting parts of the show.

Thomas:?I agree. We often see people sitting down and writing songs. They don't make it seem easy peasy lemon squeezey, but when they really apply themselves, they can all do it. That's an amazing achievement, and ultimately it's because they've all got something to say. I can't think of a single time when any of the songwriting shown on Nashville has seemed cynical.

Waldman: Before we part, what do you make of Gunnar?s fugitive brother? Is this plotline plausible? Irritating?

Thomas: JASON! That boy's a heartbreaker. Too bad it's his kid brother's heart he's breaking.

Waldman: I hope he steals Avery?s fancy new car.

Thomas: I do have one last thought, before I leave you in Tennessee and head back to Yorkshire. Every time Nashville cut to a commercial break, I was aware that everyone in the promos for other NBC shows seemed so much happier than the folks on Nashville. There doesn't seem to be much joy on this show. And when there is, it's fleeting: Rayna and Liam's special connection turned into betrayal and breakup in the blink of an eye. Will we ever see adoring looks that last longer than the time it takes to sing a love song?

Later This Week: Further analysis of Episode 11.

New 2-D material for next generation high-speed electronics

Jan. 21, 2013 ? Scientists at CSIRO and RMIT University have produced a new two-dimensional material that could revolutionise the electronics market, making "nano" more than just a marketing term.

The material -- made up of layers of crystal known as molybdenum oxides -- has unique properties that encourage the free flow of electrons at ultra-high speeds.

In a paper published in the January issue of materials science journal Advanced Materials, the researchers explain how they adapted a revolutionary material known as graphene to create a new conductive nano-material.

Graphene was created in 2004 by scientists in the UK and won its inventors a Nobel Prize in 2010. While graphene supports high speed electrons, its physical properties prevent it from being used for high-speed electronics.

The CSIRO's Dr Serge Zhuiykov said the new nano-material was made up of layered sheets -- similar to graphite layers that make up a pencil's core.

"Within these layers, electrons are able to zip through at high speeds with minimal scattering," Dr Zhuiykov said.

"The importance of our breakthrough is how quickly and fluently electrons -- which conduct electricity -- are able to flow through the new material."

RMIT's Professor Kourosh Kalantar-zadeh said the researchers were able to remove "road blocks" that could obstruct the electrons, an essential step for the development of high-speed electronics.

"Instead of scattering when they hit road blocks, as they would in conventional materials, they can simply pass through this new material and get through the structure faster," Professor Kalantar-zadeh said.

"Quite simply, if electrons can pass through a structure quicker, we can build devices that are smaller and transfer data at much higher speeds.

"While more work needs to be done before we can develop actual gadgets using this new 2D nano-material, this breakthrough lays the foundation for a new electronics revolution and we look forward to exploring its potential."

In the paper titled 'Enhanced Charge Carrier Mobility in Two-Dimensional High Dielectric Molybdenum Oxide,' the researchers describe how they used a process known as "exfoliation" to create layers of the material ~11 nm thick.

The material was manipulated to convert it into a semiconductor and nanoscale transistors were then created using molybdenum oxide.

The result was electron mobility values of >1,100 cm2/Vs -- exceeding the current industry standard for low dimensional silicon.

The work, with RMIT doctoral researcher Sivacarendran Balendhran as the lead author, was supported by the CSIRO Sensors and Sensor Networks Transformational Capability Platform and the CSIRO Materials Science and Engineering Division.

It was also a result of collaboration between researchers from Monash University, University of California -- Los Angeles (UCLA), CSIRO, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and RMIT.

House passes Sandy emergency funding

By Tom Curry, National Affairs Writer, NBC News

Updated 7:30pm ET: The U.S. House of Representatives Tuesday night approved an additional $33.7 billion in funding for emergency spending on recovery efforts aimed at helping those devastated by Hurricane Sandy. The final vote came after the House had passed another $17 billion in spending earlier in the day.

The approval of the $50.7 billion came only after political debates over spending that does not directly go to the areas impacted by the super storm.?

The House GOP leadership carefully orchestrated a multi-stage process designed to permit Republican members to vote for some Sandy aid, but not the full $60.4 billion the Senate OK?d last year, if they objected to that much spending. By designing the process in this way, the GOP leadership made it highly likely that the total package will ultimately become law after the Senate acts next week.

It's been two and a half months since Superstorm Sandy barreled through New Jersey and New York, but people are still desperately awaiting aid. NBC's Katy Tur reports.

On the $33.7 billion segment of the bill, a group of northern Republicans joined with Democrats to push the measure to passage, on a vote of 228 to 192.

Finally, in something of an anticlimax, the House approved the entire $50.7 billion measure on a vote of 241 to 180. In that vote, 49 Republicans joined 192 Democrats to approve it, while one Democrat and 179 Republicans voted to oppose.

Fiscal conservatives, who objected to spending not directly related to Sandy, were able to trim only relatively small amounts of money from the bill, for example $9.8 million for a wildlife refuge in Connecticut and $150 million for Regional Ocean Partnership grants.

In an earlier key vote, the House defeated a proposal by Rep. Mick Mulvaney, R-S.C. to offset the $17 billion in Sandy funding by a 1.63 percent across-the-board cut in non-Sandy discretionary spending. The amendment was part of an effort to avoid adding spending to the federal balance sheet.

The GOP leadership?s cautious handling of the emergency funding came after an embarrassing fracas on New Year?s Eve when House Speaker John Boehner would not permit a vote on a $60.4 billion aid bill, sparking harsh criticism from New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and House members from the Northeast.

In a joint statement, Christie joined New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Connecticut Gov. Dan Malloy, both Democrats, in praising the House action: "We are grateful to those members of Congress who today pulled together in a unified, bipartisan coalition to assist millions of their fellow Americans in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut at their greatest time of need. The tradition of Congress being there and providing support for Americans during times of crisis, no matter where they live across this great country, lives on in today's vote in the House of Representatives."

At issue Tuesday were two measures, one costing $17 billion, offered by House Appropriations Committee Chairman Hal Rogers, R-Ky., and the larger one of $33.7 billion, offered by Rep. Rodney Frelinghuysen, R-N.J., a senior member of the Appropriations Committee.

House Appropriations Committee Chairman Rep. Hal Rogers, R-Ky., left, and Rep. Nita Lowey, R-NY, right, testify before the House Rules Committee at the Capitol in Washington, Monday, Jan. 14, 2013.

Some House Republicans remain alarmed at the large outlays and the additional debt that they will necessitate.?

Mulvaney?said on the House floor, ?I want this money to go where it needs to go? and said he did not intend to delay the funding. But due to the growing national debt and reliance on foreign lenders, ?We are no longer capable of taking care of our own.?

He defended his call for offsetting spending cuts, saying to his colleagues: ?Just tell me what you?re willing to do without? in order to pay for helping victims of Hurricane Sandy.

But Rogers denounced?Mulvaney?s proposal as one requiring ?devastating, slash-and-burn cuts.?

The Club for Growth, a conservative advocacy group,?said it would put all three votes, on the two bills and on the?Mulvaney amendment, on its vote-rating scorecard to hold members accountable in the 2014 elections.

Earlier Tuesday Rep. Cory Gardner, R-Colo., defended the bipartisan effort by Colorado members to add to the emergency bill $125 million for watershed protection and flood mitigation, including about $20 million for areas in Colorado burned by last summer?s wildfires.

The watershed protection money was in the Sandy bill that the Senate passed last month. The House Rules Committee rebuffed Gardner?s effort Monday night, but he said he hoped Colorado's two senators will make efforts to add the money when the Senate debates the emergency bill next week.

?The title of the bill is ?The Disaster Relief Appropriations Act.? That?s the name of the bill. It?s not the ?Sandy Disaster Act.? It?s not the ?Sandy Relief Act.? It?s a disaster relief act. New Yorkers weren?t the only ones who had their homes burned down in a devastating natural disaster. We had over 600 in Colorado alone,? Gardner said.

?If we?re going to have disaster assistance for people in this country who truly need it ? because we are all in this together -- then we shouldn?t just cherry-pick Northeastern United States versus Southwestern United States,? he added.

None of the short-term tactical maneuvering on Tuesday addressed a serious and growing problem:? the increasing frequency of catastrophic weather events is making it more difficult to prepare the federal budget and to do long-term fiscal planning. If catastrophes require adding $60 billion a year in new spending, it is in effect creating another large Cabinet department every year, without the money to do so.

2012 sustained long-term climate warming trend, NASA finds

Jan. 15, 2013 ? NASA scientists say 2012 was the ninth warmest of any year since 1880, continuing a long-term trend of rising global temperatures. With the exception of 1998, the nine warmest years in the 132-year record all have occurred since 2000, with 2010 and 2005 ranking as the hottest years on record.

NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) in New York, which monitors global surface temperatures on an ongoing basis, released an updated analysis January 15 that compares temperatures around the globe in 2012 to the average global temperature from the mid-20th century. The comparison shows how Earth continues to experience warmer temperatures than several decades ago.

The average temperature in 2012 was about 58.3 degrees Fahrenheit (14.6 Celsius), which is 1.0 F (0.6 C) warmer than the mid-20th century baseline. The average global temperature has risen about 1.4 degrees F (0.8 C) since 1880, according to the new analysis.

Scientists emphasize that weather patterns always will cause fluctuations in average temperature from year to year, but the continued increase in greenhouse gas levels in Earth's atmosphere assures a long-term rise in global temperatures. Each successive year will not necessarily be warmer than the year before, but on the current course of greenhouse gas increases, scientists expect each successive decade to be warmer than the previous decade.

"One more year of numbers isn't in itself significant," GISS climatologist Gavin Schmidt said. "What matters is this decade is warmer than the last decade, and that decade was warmer than the decade before. The planet is warming. The reason it's warming is because we are pumping increasing amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere."

Carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas that traps heat and largely controls Earth's climate. It occurs naturally and also is emitted by the burning of fossil fuels for energy. Driven by increasing human-made emissions, the level of carbon dioxide in Earth's atmosphere has been rising consistently for decades.

The carbon dioxide level in the atmosphere was about 285 parts per million in 1880, the first year in the GISS temperature record. By 1960, the atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration, measured at NOAA's Mauna Loa Observatory, was about 315 parts per million. Today, that measurement exceeds 390 parts per million.

While the globe experienced relatively warm temperatures in 2012, the continental U.S. endured its warmest year on record by far, according to NOAA, the official keeper of U.S. weather records.

"The U.S. temperatures in the summer of 2012 are an example of a new trend of outlying seasonal extremes that are warmer than the hottest seasonal temperatures of the mid-20th century," GISS director James E. Hansen said. "The climate dice are now loaded. Some seasons still will be cooler than the long-term average, but the perceptive person should notice that the frequency of unusually warm extremes is increasing. It is the extremes that have the most impact on people and other life on the planet."

The temperature analysis produced at GISS is compiled from weather data from more than 1,000 meteorological stations around the world, satellite observations of sea-surface temperature, and Antarctic research station measurements. A publicly available computer program is used to calculate the difference between surface temperature in a given month and the average temperature for the same place during 1951 to 1980. This three-decade period functions as a baseline for the analysis. The last year that experienced cooler temperatures than the 1951 to 1980 average was 1976.

The GISS temperature record is one of several global temperature analyses, along with those produced by the Met Office Hadley Centre in the United Kingdom and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's National Climatic Data Center in Asheville, N.C. These three primary records use slightly different methods, but overall, their trends show close agreement.

Samsung unveils gesture-control TVs at gadget show

(AP) ? New TVs from Samsung will recognize an expanded range of gestures so people can swipe through on-screen menus in a way that revolutionizes the old remote control.

Samsung Electronics Co., the Korean electronics maker that is successfully challenging Apple in smartphones, touts the new user interface as faster and more intuitive than before.

Samsung said Monday that the new interface will be a feature of upcoming smart TVs. In addition, certain high-end Samsung smart TVs sold since last year can be upgraded with an add-on kit ? complete with the required quad-core processor ? that will be sold separately for a few hundred dollars.

Samsung President Boo-Keun Yoon said the new features are designed to make TV-viewing easy as consumers face more and more choices in what they watch.

"We have developed TVs that respond to people's needs and lifestyles, TVs that know in advance what people want to watch, TVs that have the power to create the ultimate lean-back experience," Yoon said.

At the International CES gadget show, Samsung also introduced an 85-inch "ultrahigh definition" set, in line with rivals that are all rolling out screens with four times the pixels as the current HD. The higher resolution will let TV screens get larger and people to sit closer without a decline in picture quality, though initially the price tag will limit those sets to technology's early adopters.

The new lineup of smart TVs respond to more natural speech and motion, similar to the way the Kinect controller on an Xbox 360 game console allows users to swipe through menus by gesturing in the air. The camera is mounted on top of the screen and can be folded back for people concerned about privacy.

Earlier Monday, LG Electronics Inc. unveiled a new Magic Remote, which acts like a wand that is sensitive to motion and is used to navigate on-screen menus. LG said the new model responds better to natural speech and can be controlled with a single finger. It also lets you change the channels by writing numbers in the air.

Samsung's new handheld remote control comes with a touch-sensitive clickable track pad, which is another way to navigate through viewing options.

Because it is integrated with Facebook, Twitter and YouTube, the new interface accepts text input. You have a range of options for typing ? through a synced smartphone, a Bluetooth-enabled wireless keyboard accessory, using hand gestures for an on-screen keyboard, or using its voice-to-type software.

Search functions also span Web video apps and live TV, meaning that searches of a show will inform viewers if and when an episode is available on live TV, or if it's available through an app such as Netflix.

Nintendo's Wii U game console does something similar by showing search results from live TV and Web video apps. But by being integrated with the TV, Samsung's universal search function doesn't require the user to change the TV's source input.

And since you can also play some games on its new smart TVs, the new sets from Samsung are acting more and more like mobile computing devices with an extra-large screen.

Dell's Project Ophelia an Android 40 stick that turns any display into a PC

Dell Wyse, the company's cloud services arm, is worried about your security. It's also thinking that it's time you didn't need to drag that laptop wherever you go. As such, it's working on Project Ophelia, a chunky Android stick that turns any HDTV or monitor into a display. What's different to devices like FXI's Cotton Candy, for instance, is that the hardware is a gateway to a cloud server where all of your content lives. Users can play games, display presentations or finish the last few lines of that essay wherever they are. The company isn't talking about details (or how you'd control such a device), but it's expecting to have it ready for prime-time by the summer.

Steven W. Giovinco's Recover Reputation Picks Crucial Business ...

    Technology Image

New York, NY, January 06, 2013 ?(PR.com)? Steven W. Giovinco of Recover Reputation, a leading online reputation management and repair firm, selects three key business trends for 2013 that will generate more leads and more business.

?Online reputation management, online content marketing and online video marketing will continue to drive lead development, sale strategies and user engagement,? says Steven W. Giovinco, an online marketing and reputation expert.

Recover Reputation shares three crucial business trends and predictions for 2013 that every business should know about.

Online Reputation Management for All, Including Professionals Steven W. Giovinco sees 2013 as the break-out year for online reputation management and repair.

Online reputation management will go beyond restaurant reviews on sites like Yelp. In 2013, professionals and small businesses will focus on online reputation management as a regular part of doing business and will be a major focus of their lead generation process, predicts Recover Reputation.

Word of mouth recommendations will continue to be important for professionals but will be supplemented with good quality and carefully developed online reputations, notes Steven Giovinco.

Potential clients will search online looking for professionals such as doctors, lawyers, dentists, financial advisors, etc. and will be checking their online presence, reviews and search results before deciding to work with them.

    Online Content Marketing
Recover Reputation identifies online content marketing as another important business trend for 2013.

?Due to recent and continued changes in Google?s search algorithm, search engine optimization techniques has been forced to evolve drastically,? says Giovinco.

?The past way of optimizing a web site using backlinks, key search terms and other approaches are important but will no longer be the main focus of driving traffic and generating business leads. Content will be king in 2013 and for the foreseeable future,? he notes.

For businesses to succeed in this new era, Recover Reputation recommends creating targeted writing for blogs, articles, press releases and even web site text. Posting promotional announcements or general information has become much less important and poorly written information could be a liability in 2013. As a result, an area that will see increased development is content marketing.

?Online content marketing is a way of producing excellent, useful and pertinent content for the end user. It?s not purely a marketing or sales technique?rather, it gives away key information to build trust in the reader which helps convert them to a customer,? says Steven W. Giovinco.

    Online Video Marketing
The last important business trend from Recover Reputation is online video marketing.

Video in 2013 will be used more by businesses and professionals to build a great online presence and to show the customer or client that they are an expert in their field.

?'Talking heads,' or brief interviews by the company?s owner will be replaced with more sophisticated and engaging brief videos tailored to solving a specific problem for the client or user, and will be published to additional platforms besides YouTube, such as industry specific sites and communities,? says Steven.

    Scout by Telenav (for iPhone)

Telenav is one of the veteran GPS navigation?players, having had a product available on various platforms for years before mobile apps became "cool." Many phones shipped with Telenav-powered, rebranded GPS apps that carriers charged $9.99 per month for (think AT&T Navigator or Sprint Navigator). Scout by Telenav brings much of that same technology to your iPhone for free, complete with a commuter-focused dashboard that makes your trip to work and back home easier than ever. Google Maps remains our Editors' Choice, thanks to its robust pedestrian navigation and additional flexibility, but Scout offers a compelling, driver-oriented interface in comparison.

    User Interface and POI Search
For this review, I tested Scout on a Verizon Apple iPhone 5 running iOS 6.0.2. The home screen is very different than it is on other apps, which often just drop you onto a 2D or 3D map. In this case, there are big buttons for your home and work addresses, complete with an ETA for each, were you to begin navigation now from your current location. Below that are shortcut buttons to find various POI categories, such as nearby parking or restaurants. The top of the screen features a large, prominent search bar that makes it easy to run POI searches at any time, and you also get an icon for current weather conditions. One glitch: Unfortunately, the app still isn't formatted for the wider screen on the iPhone 5.

    Scout by TeleNav (for iPhone)

Most addresses I tested worked fine when entered; the one mistake was that the dash used in Queens street numbers tripped up the app (e.g. 30-47). Once I removed the dash, it had no problem finding the address. Input an address, and you can navigate there via one of three routes the app finds for you. It shows a visual of all three right up front, which is useful. Note that this app works primarily in portrait mode; the only time you can activate landscape mode, like a regular standalone GPS, is once you're on the road.

    Performance and Conclusions
Once you tap Navigate, you can begin the trip.?Map graphics animate smoothly, and look sharp, if not particularly detailed. I had no problem navigating to a variety of destinations in New York and New Jersey using Scout. The voice prompts are loud enough and well-timed. As you approach each turn, the top bar fills up with "green" to help you judge when to turn, in addition to use the usual X number of feet or miles that counts down. This helps reinforce exactly where to turn, as more than once in my life, an app would say "turn left in 0.2 miles" and I'd turn on an earlier street than I was supposed to by accident.

    Scout by TeleNav (for iPhone)

On the other hand, voice prompts sounded choppy; you can tell that they were recorded by different people in different studios. It also described the FDR Drive's service road in New York City as "FDR Doctor Service Road" which seems like a silly mistake, given how many streets there are in the U.S. with the word "Drive" in them.

Aside from the lack of speed limit signs and 3D lane assistance, Scout by Telenav functions perfectly well as a turn-by-turn voice app on the iPhone, and its comprehensive dashboard seems ideal for commuters and on-the-go types. Google Maps is our Editors' Choice for free iPhone GPS navigation; credit its ultra-smooth map animation, pitch-perfect POI accuracy, and pedestrian and public transit support. But Scout is an easily viable alternative that's actually better from a driving point of view, thanks to its crisp, clear interface and excellent routing accuracy. If you like the idea of crowd-sourced alerts for speed traps, traffic jams, and other by-the-minute events en route, give Waze a look, as that app has improved remarkably in recent months.

Vizio refreshes its PC lineup: all new models have touchscreens, quad-core CPUs

Vizio refreshes its PC lineup all new models have touchscreens, quadcore CPUs

When Vizio entered the PC market last year, we weren't gushing about its computers, per se, but we found ourselves rooting for the company anyway: for all it got wrong (flaky trackpads, poor battery life), it did a lot of things right. We had to respect Vizio for giving most of its PCs 1080p screens and installing a clean, bloatware-free version of Windows. Not to mention, Vizio kept the price relatively low, the same way it did when it was trying to break into the TV space. Now, the company is completely refreshing its lineup for 2013, leaving only one model from 2012 (that would be its 15-inch mainstream notebook). Starting now, all of its all-ones and Thin + Light laptops will come standard with touchscreens and quad-core processors, including some from AMD (a first for Vizio).

What's curious is that although Vizio is taking the opportunity to replace most of its PCs, it hasn't actually made any changes to the industrial design. That means, for better or worse, that these new models will probably be quite similar to the PCs we tested just a few months ago. Same metal chassis but also, the same flat keyboard. What they do promise is faster performance, along with improved audio. Both the 14- and 15-inch Thin + Light Touch are available with either a Core i7 CPU or AMD's top-of-the-line A10 chip. Likewise, the 24-inch all-in-one is now the All-in-One Touch, and it too will be available with AMD and Intel processors. The 27-inch model, however, will be Intel-only.

As ever, these machines will have that clean, Microsoft Signature install, and almost all will have 1080p screens, save for the 14-inch Thin + Light, which has 1,600 x 900 resolution. No word on pricing, though Vizio says they'll go on sale in mid-February. We'll be back soon enough with hands-on shots but for now, check out some press photos after the break.

(AP) ? President Bashar Assad called on Syrians to defend their country against religious extremists seeking to destroy the nation, dismissing any prospect of dialogue with the "murderous criminals" he says are behind the uprising even as he outlined his vision for a peaceful settlement to the civil war.

In a one-hour speech to the nation in which he appeared confident and relaxed, Assad struck a defiant tone, ignoring international demands for him to step down and saying he is ready to hold a dialogue but only with those "who have not betrayed Syria."

He offered a national reconciliation conference, elections and a new constitution but demanded regional and Western countries stop funding and arming rebels trying to overthrow him first.

Syria's opposition swiftly rejected the proposal. Those fighting to topple the regime, including rebels on the ground, have repeatedly said they will accept nothing less than the president's departure, dismissing any kind of settlement that leaves him in the picture.

"It is an excellent initiative that is only missing one crucial thing: His resignation," said Kamal Labwani, a veteran secular dissident and member of the opposition's Syrian National Coalition umbrella group.

"All what he is proposing will happen automatically, but only after he steps down," Lawani told The Associated Press by telephone from Sweden.

On top of that, Assad's new initiative is reminiscent of symbolic changes and concessions that his government made earlier in the uprising, which were rejected at the time as too little too late.

Speaking at the Opera House in central Damascus, Assad told the hall packed with supporters ? who frequently broke out in cheers and applause ? that "we are in a state of war."

"We are fighting an external aggression that is more dangerous than any others, because they use us to kill each other," he said. "It is a war between the nation and its enemies, between the people and the murderous criminals."

Assad has rarely spoken since the uprising against his rule began in March 2011, and Sunday's speech was his first since June. His last public comments came in an interview in November to Russian TV in which he vowed to die in Syria.

On Sunday, he seemed equally confident in his troops' ability to crush the rebels fighting his rule, even as they edge in closer than ever to his seat of power, Damascus.

British Foreign Secretary William Hague said Assad's speech was "beyond hypocritical." In a message posted on his official Twitter feed, Hague said "empty promises of reform fool no one."

EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton's office said in a statement that the bloc will "look carefully if there is anything new in the speech but we maintain our position that Assad has to step aside and allow for a political transition."

Wearing a suit and tie, Assad spoke before a collage of pictures of what appeared to be Syrians who have been killed since March 2011. At the end of his speech and as he was leaving the hall, he was mobbed by a group of loyalists shouting: "With our blood and souls we redeem you, Bashar!"

The president waved and blew kisses to the crowd on his way out.

Assad acknowledged the enormous impact of the conflict, which the United Nations recently estimated had killed more than 60,000 people.

"We meet today and suffering is overwhelming Syrian land. There is no place for joy in any corner of the country in the absence of security and stability," he said. "I look at the eyes of Syria's children and I don't see any happiness."

The Internet was cut in many parts of Damascus ahead of the address, apparently for security reasons.

As in previous speeches, Assad said his forces were fighting groups of "murderous criminals" and jihadi elements and denied that there was an uprising against his family's decades-long rule.

He stressed the presence of religious extremists and jihadi elements among those fighting in Syria, calling them "terrorists who carry the ideology of al-Qaeda" and "servants who know nothing but the language of slaughter."

He said Syria will not take dictates from anyone ? a reference to outside powers ? and urged his countrymen to unite to save the nation.

Outlining his peace initiative, he said: "The first part of a political solution would require regional powers to stop funding and arming (the rebels), an end to terrorism and controlling the borders."

He said this would then be followed by dialogue and a national reconciliation conference and the formation of a wide representative government which would then oversee new elections, a new constitution and general amnesty.

However, Assad made clear his offer to hold a dialogue is not open to those whom he considers extremists or carrying out a foreign agenda, essentially eliminating anyone that has taken up arms against the regime.

"We never rejected a political solution ... but with whom should we talk? With those who have an extremist ideology, who only understand the language of terrorism?" he said. "Or should we with negotiate puppets whom the West brought?"

"We negotiate with the master not with the slave," he said.

As in previous speeches and interviews, he clung to the view that the crisis in Syria was a foreign-backed agenda and said it was not an uprising against his rule.

"Is this a revolution and are these revolutionaries? By God, I say they are a bunch of criminals," he said.

13 Indian PR trends for 2013 | Our Thought

It?s that time of the year again,?it?s time to?take up the crystal ball and look at what trends will matter for the business of public relations in India in 2013.

    Here goes:

    1. Social media

Social media is emerging as a major influence that shapes PR strategy and is pushing changes in all directions, encouraging brands to embrace online PR. This was the one topic on the mind of every PR professional we spoke to. Says, Poonam Thakur, Manager of PR?and Corporate Communication, MakeMyTrip.com, ?Social media has provided a viable platform for citizens to engage. However sustainability is something that is expected to be a challenge for campaigners. Creating a self-sustaining engagement programme is the Holy Grail and the confluence of savvy digital marketing and engaging content may just help us achieve it!?

    2. Rise of the digital journalist

PR strategists will need to further factor in a whole new era of journalism: digital journalists make up an important additional platform to deal with. ?Next year is also likely to see social media becoming a larger part of the PR efforts undertaken by most organizations thereby changing the pace and style of corporate communications. The mind boggling pace at which social media is growing is making organizations evaluate their communications strategy and public relations today encompasses establishing and building strong relationships with bloggers, twitterati and social media experts.? says? Eashwari Deshpande, Public Relations Manager at?Intel South Asia.

    3. Civil society

Five?years ago, news generated by civil society movements was virtually nonexistent. The Anna Hazare and Arvind Kejriwal public engagements have been a game changer for civil society and its impact on PR nationally. Dhritiman Biswas, a seasoned corporate affairs and crisis management professional, says, ?2013 will see more of mass movements and ?ground swell? campaigns, put together with help of social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter. As the mobile penetration increases (especially smart phones) in Tier 2 and 3 cities, barriers of accessibility and language will break down leading to a more inclusive movement, which till now was limited to urban areas. Communication professionals will need to accept this paradigm shift as the ?new normal? and create strategies taking this new parameter to exploit issues or limit the damage.?

    4. It?s the content!

Experts recommend focusing more on content than relationships in 2013. Karthik Srinivasan, AVP?Corporate Communications, Flipkart.com asserts that, ?The latter was PR 1.0 and the former is PR 2.0. We are living in an era of content explosion and PR is well suited to make appropriate use of it to benefit clients.?

    5. Brand journalism

Brand journalism is one trend that 2013 could see more of. While this may be more prevalent internationally rather than in India, that does not face that big of challenge of shrinking newsrooms yet, Carson Dalton, Head of?Corporate Communications, BT Asia Pacific, flags this off as a trend for 2013 dictated by shrinking budgets and shrinking newsrooms, ?Companies like Coca Cola already make use of brand journalism, where journalists are free to pick up content from websites. This is a situation where you start owning the content and this trend is being aided by the rise of social media platforms.?

    6. Big data

Big data will continue to be a source of crucial business information. Says Carson Dalton, ?Social Big Data is here to stay. Applications and local innovation will simplify the process in a multi lingual market.?

    7. Sustainability

Dhritiman Biswas points out that ?with the Companies Bill poised to pass in the Indian Parliament, CSR and Sustainability will see greater focus (and hence jobs creation in this area) in 2013.?

    8. Visual PR

PR is set to become even more visual in 2013, with people consuming information in quick visual bytes. ?Infographics in press releases would be the next big thing in visual PR in India,? according to Biswas.

    9. The tech sector?

The tech sector will continue to generate news trends in 2013 and therefore opportunities for PR. Eashwari Deshpande, Public Relations Manager, Intel South Asia, points out that ?for the technology industry, in particular, there?s likely to be high interest around the connected multi-device scenario in India, cloud computing, small and medium business technology adoption as well as growth and the interest around the government?s IT policy and implementation.?

    10. Mobile PR

?Brands have to create a mobile strategy as most emerging markets and the world over are accessing the internet via their smart devices?, says Dalton.

    11. Crisis communication and the rising importance of PR

Eashwari Deshpande says that, ? In tough times, public relations becomes the most effective way of getting credible visibility for the organisations and 2013 is likely to see more activity in the PR functions at most organizations.?

    12. Intensive?24?7 news cycle

?In an era where news breaks on Twitter and reputations are built or broken on Facebook, the need to manage perceptions is more acute than ever before. PR folks need to be nimble, well-connected and make their peace with being on-the-job 24?7?, points out Poonam Thakur.

    13. Being strategic and not merely tactical will lead to?a better?image for the PR business

?Have an opinion and air it to the client as counsel confidently. PR is not a press release dissemination function ? it is a function that leads to change in perceptions. In a way, PR industry by itself needs to do better PR for the profession,? advises, Flipkart?s Srinivasan.

And here?s an extra trend for luck that is bound to warm the hearts of agencies ?

    Not bashing PR agencies
As Carson Dalton puts it succinctly, ?Bashing PR agencies is so 1990s?.
