Latest signs of housing rebound send stocks higher

NEW YORK (AP) ? The latest signs of a rebound in housing are sending stocks sharply higher on Wall Street.

The Dow Jones industrial average jumped nearly 116 points to end at 13,900 Tuesday, led by a 6 percent surge in Home Depot. The country's biggest home improvement store chain reported a big increase in earnings.

In another sign that the housing market was gaining steam, the government reported that sales of new homes jumped 16 percent last month to the highest level since July 2008.

That sent the stocks of homebuilders higher. Hovnanian jumped 11 percent.

The Standard & Poor's 500 rose nine points to 1,496. The Nasdaq rose 13 to 3,129.

Two stocks rose for every one that fell on the New York Stock Exchange. Volume was average at 3.8 billion shares.

JP Morgan Chase to slash $1 billion; cut staff

JPMorgan Chase became the latest Wall Street firm to scale back in an uncertain economy, announcing plans Tuesday to save $1 billion through various costs cuts and about 4,000 job reductions.

The bank, struggling to emerge from the shadow of a trading scandal known as the "London Whale" affair that dealt the firm its biggest ever trading loss, also issued a stark warning about the rising costs of regulation.

A frequent critic of efforts to increase oversight on Wall Street, JPMorgan said that new red tape could cost up to 10 percent of market revenues. However, the financial services giant cautioned that the effects of the Volcker Rule won't be seen for at least two to three years. JPMorgan also said it plans to add 200 more branches by 2014.

JPMorgan has instituted a number of changes to its executive suite lately, an issue JPMorgan Chairman and CEO Jamie Dimon addressed when asked about whether management changes had become too disruptive, and a recent call to split the chairman and CEO roles.

The bank is "completely comfortable" with management overhauls and current leadership, Dimon said. Responding to a call to sever his joint position, the bank chief called the controversy a "sideshow". He added that the board should have flexibility to make those decisions.

The results from Italy's election continue to roil markets, which are becoming increasingly attuned to the threat of Washington's budget stalemate. Dimon said both events were unsettling investors.

Europe's debt troubles are "a roller coaster" for markets, Dimon said, adding that the threat of sequestration was a "legitimate" worry as well. Markets should be concerned by the potential for a quick and substantial jump in interest rates, should Washington fail to strike a deal on taxes and spending, he added.

The bank stated it would reduce headcount in its mortgage banking unit by between 13,000 to 15,000 by the end of 2014. Most of these employees are considered contractual and hourly workers, and not full-time, the bank said.

The bank's biggest challenges, according to Marianne Lake, JPMorgan's CFO who spoke at JPMorgan's Investor Meeting, are from regulatory issues.

Earlier in the day, Lake said that the planned cuts would be driven by savings in its mortgage unit, during a period when the U.S. housing sector has shown fairly steady improvement from the post- 2008 meltdown.

JPMorgan's cost-saving efforts come at a time when its key rivals are also moving to adjust to a volatile global economy. Goldman Sachs is reportedly preparing a round of job cuts; meanwhile, beleaguered financial behemoth Citigroup announced its own massive restructuring plans last year.

(Read more: Citigroup Axes 11,000 Jobs, $1.1 Billion in Costs)

Speaking at the investor conference earlier, Dimon said that while the company has benefited from downturns, it can maintain a 15 percent return on tangible equity.

Twin bombings kill 12, wound more in south India

HYDERABAD, India (AP) ? A pair of bombs exploded in a crowded shopping area in the southern Indian city of Hyderabad, killing at least 12 people and wounding scores of others in the worst bombing in the country in more than a year, officials said.

The blasts occurred about two minutes apart at around 7 p.m. Thursday outside a movie theater and a bus station, police said. Storefronts were shattered, motorcycles covered in debris, and food and plates from a roadside restaurant were scattered on the ground near a tangle of dead bodies. Passersby rushed the wounded out of the area.

"This is a dastardly attack, the guilty will not go unpunished," Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said. He appealed to the public to remain calm.

The bombs were attached to two bicycles about 150 meters (500 feet) apart in Dilsukh Nagar district, Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde told reporters in New Delhi. The district is a usually crowded shopping area near a residential neighborhood.

When asked if the government had any suspects, Shinde responded: "We have to investigate."

The blast killed 12 people, Home Secretary R.K. Singh said.

Mahesh Kumar, a 21-year-old student, was heading home from a tutoring class when a bomb went off.

"I heard a huge sound and something hit me, I fell down, and somebody brought me to the hospital," said Kumar, who suffered shrapnel wounds.

Hyderabad, a city of 10 million in the state of Andhra Pradesh, is a hub of India's information technology industry and has a mixed population of Muslims and Hindus.

"This (attack) is to disturb the peaceful living of all communities in Andhra Pradesh," said Kiran Kumar Reddy, the state's chief minister.

The explosions Thursday were the first major bomb attack to hit India since a September 2011 blast outside the High Court in New Delhi killed 13 people. The government has been heavily criticized for its failure to arrest the masterminds behind previous bombings.

Officials from the National Investigation Agency and commandos of the National Security Guards were sent from New Delhi to Hyderabad to help with the investigation.

The United States, whose Secretary of State John Kerry was meeting Thursday in Washington with Indian Foreign Secretary Ranjan Mathai, condemned the attack.

"The United States stands with India in combating the scourge of terrorism and we also prepared to offer any and all assistance Indian authorities may need," State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland told a news briefing.

Rana Banerji, a former security official, said India remains vulnerable to such attacks because there is poor coordination between the national government and the states. Police reforms are also moving very slowly and the quality of intelligence gathering is poor, he said.

"The concept of homeland security should be made effective, on a war footing," he said.

India has been in a state of alert since Mohammed Afzal Guru, a Kashmiri, was hanged in a New Delhi jail nearly two weeks ago. Guru had been convicted of involvement in a 2001 attack on India's Parliament that killed 14 people, including five gunmen.

Many in Indian-ruled Kashmir believe Guru did not receive a fair trial, and the secrecy with which the execution was carried out fueled anger in a region where anti-India sentiment runs deep.

Business Security Is Very Important For Our Business | Jason ...

We have tested and designed some of the best products out there for use when travelling. Now we have an opportunity to provide the best in portable flagpoles, that can be used anywhere you can imagine. If you have bought a new house and want to install high security systems, then locksmiths can suggest you the right security system for your house. You can even find details about locksmiths available in your nearby area by conducting an online search on the Internet or from trusted references.

By surfing various sites and online portals on the Internet, you can collect useful information about each of these topics. In this way, you will get an idea about these topics and accordingly you can plan, which type of security system you want to install in your house. These professionals are trained and expert at making new keys, duplicate keys, etc. They can provide you guidance as to where the security systems should be placed in your home for increased security. If you want an affordable aluminum flagpole the wall thickness seems to be thin enough that if you are using the flagpole in high winds or gusts the flagpole will flex and bend just a little. However, aluminum is not like fiberglass, once it bends it tends to hold the distorted shape making the collapsing of the pole difficult at best when you are taking it down for storage.

With the locking flagpole that problem no longer exists. Now, there have been many questions asked of me about the aluminum flagpoles, ranging from questions of strength, portability, overall length when collapsed for storage or transport and many more questions dealing with cost and warranty. Plastic lockers will be a good helper in our office, lockable filing cabinet and security mail boxes are very important for business security.

SEO is Dead ? Time To Get Social : Online Gambling News

The internet ? it?s getting old

It is almost 28 years since little-known computer manufacturer Symbolics registered the first ever .com domain on the internet and since then millions upon millions of other companies have followed suit. In this time, billions of pages have been indexed by top search engines and many more backlinks have been sent back and forth between webmasters all over the globe. Whilst I don?t want to provide a mundane history lesson on the origins of the World Wide Web, I do want to begin by reiterating the obvious point that the internet is no longer a novelty from a marketing and branding point of view.

Every man and his dog now has a website which ipso facto mSEO is Dead ? Time To Get Socialakes it so much harder to get ahead in e-marketing these days especially with the myriad of competition we all have to face. The sad truth is, entering an industry such as affiliate marketing or gaming at such a late stage is always going to be an uphill struggle, especially if you decide search engines such as Google are going to be your number one source of traffic.

Starting an affiliate site in 2013, with many more sites around you that a) have been around for longer b) have more authority on the search engines and c) have a bigger marketing budget at their disposal makes SEO essentially fruitless. Trying to play catch-up with the big boys will only leave you tearing your hair out and force you to quit three months down the line with only a #52 position for the search term ?bet on a really, really boring sporting event that barely anyone is interested in? to your name.

Explore new ways to gain traffic

But this doesn?t mean you shouldn?t bother altogether, there are of course ways to topple the old guard and make your mark in the turbulent world of affiliate marketing but in order to do this, you have to start exploring other avenues. Whilst Google is unarguably the most powerful web property on the internet these days, companies such as Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin and many more aren?t far behind. And with the concept of ?Social Media? marketing barely a decade old, this is the route new affiliates should take to get ahead.

Good, targeted traffic should always be your number one goal in order to achieve results and with the vast majority of people all over the world with at least a Facebook account or Twitter profile at hand, there isn?t a niche out there that you couldn?t target using Social Media.

Whilst you may at this point be arguing that Social Media marketing isn?t exactly a walk in the park either, it is nothing when you compare it to its bigger, nastier, more established older brother Search Engine Optimisation. The number one rule for SEO is that ?content is king? and this very much applies to Facebook fan page owners too. The viral nature of sites such as Facebook and Twitter means you absolutely must send out great content on a regular basis and as a result you will see the fruits of your labour eventually.

Treat Social Media like it?s real life

SEO is Dead ? Time To Get SocialAt ComeOn! we always try to be unique and interesting when we communicate on our social channels. It sounds obvious but you?d be surprised at how many people fail to do this! Treat conversations on Social Media the same way you would treat conversations with people in real life.

When making general chit-chat with a work colleague over morning coffee you would more often than not (unless you have the social skills of a toilet seat) realise that he/she does not want to know what you had for dinner the previous night or the knowledge that your electricity bill is due and it is in fact ?5 more than you thought it would be.

You may however, decide to include a mention about the hilarious video on Youtube you saw of a monkey performing magic tricks or choose to discuss the prospects of your beloved football team and their chances of staying up in the Premier League this season. It really is simple; if you have something interesting to say, people will want to be your friend. But if you contribute less to the conversation than your neighbour?s cat, then people will probably want to stay clear of you.

A picture tells a thousand words

Countless studies online have proven that people are more engaged with content when images are put in front of them.

It?s the exact same reason why people would rather watch TV than read a book. Images and videos are great for sharing and can be a great tool in getting your point across to your followers. At ComeOn! HQ, time and time again we?ve seen that social updates with images or videos easily outperform updates with just text alone. So get scouring your favourite news and video sites for great content or even better?create your own! All it takes is a camera and a creative mind, so if you have either of those, you?re already half way there.

Why Social Media is better than SEO ? an example

Let?s say some lucrative sugar daddy hands you ?1000 to invest in promoting your new online sports betting site. You have two options, you can either invest in SEO and buy some relevant links or you can use the money for advertising on your social channels and build yourself up a very impressive following.

Should you decide to take option one and buy links you?ll probably find after months of waiting you will begin to rank for some of your chosen keywords and as a result Google will start sending you a slither of traffic your way. However just to sustain this traffic and further grow it, it?s likely you will need to invest more in the future just to keep up with your competitors who are no doubt doing the same as you but to a higher degree. ?1000 in Social Media however can get you a lot further. Whilst PPC rates in Facebook ads fluctuate, it?s likely that this amount of investment could garner you 3,000 likes on your newly created fan page.

And with excellent content that will be liked by your fans and as a result show up on their friends? news feeds, you could quite easily double your number of likes within a year if you stick at it and be patient. Let?s not forget with 3000 fans, if you were to feed your latest articles directly to your page,
all you?d need is 1% of these followers to engage with the content and click it and that?s 30 unique visits to your site straight off the bat.

It?s obvious then that the more fans you have, the higher the average number of visitors per article you will bring to your site. If the content you post on your site is just as engaging as the content on your page, people will want to stick around and know more about you and your business and this is when you can start converting your traffic into hard-earned cash.

The benefits don?t stop there however! Having a great social following automatically benefits you from an SEO perspective. Great content, seen by plenty of people will almost always get linked to. Whether it?s a betting news article that a user wants to discuss on their favourite forum or a slot guide a niche blogger feels would be useful on their blog, these types of links come along Scott-free and are simply a positive by-product of producing great content that engages with people.

So to save disappointment and stress so mind-numbing you?ll want to tear your hair out, this year I strongly advise you to put SEO on the back-burner. Online business, not just in gaming but everywhere is shifting towards a fresher, more vibrant social platform and it?s not too late for you to be a part of it.

Rock-paper-scissors a parable for cycles in finance, fashion, politics and more

Feb. 19, 2013 ? Using a grown-up version of the rock-paper-scissors game, Indiana University cognitive scientists offer a new theory of the group dynamics that arise in situations as varied as cycles of fashion, fluctuations of financial markets, eBay bidding wars and political campaign strategies.

In a study written about this week in PLOS ONE, the researchers analyzed situations in which each person's decision depends on what they think other people will decide, looking at the riddle of "what you think I think you think I think."

What they found, said Seth Frey, doctoral candidate in the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences in the IU College of Arts and Sciences, is that "people playing this kind of game subtly influence each other, converging on similar ways of reasoning over time. The natural analogy for the process is to a flock of birds veering in concert."

"Anticipation," he said, "may be the motor that keeps fads running in circles. It could be a source of the violent swings that we see in financial markets. Anyone in a bidding war on eBay may have been caught in this dynamic. If the bidders are tweaking their increasing bids based on the tweaks of others, then the whole group may converge in price and determine how those prices rise. The process isn't governed by the intrinsic value of that mint-condition Star Wars lunch box, but on the collective dynamics of people trying to reason through each other's thoughts."

Robert Goldstone, professor in the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences, said they wanted "an elegant parable in a laboratory context" of the kind of real-world situations when people are trying to assess what other people are deciding. The researchers are interested in what the entire group looks like when everybody is trying to second guess everybody else.

"At a core level," he said, "people's guesses do converge, and that's interesting because dominant models suggest otherwise."

Nash equilibrium, for example -- the influential theory of John Nash, a mathematician portrayed in several films and the book "A Beautiful Mind" -- would predict that everyone will end up at random places with equal probability for each round. It's a theory, Goldstone said, "that assumes full rationality, full ability to reason about what you know I know you know I know."

Instead, "we are getting this systematic behavior, which is not random," he said. "Even though people are trying to beat each other out, they end up in synchrony."

Whether looking at benign social habits or mass panics, Frey and Goldstone conclude, social theorists have always treated group behavior as though it resulted from a kind of mindlessness. But this lesson from rock-paper-scissors suggests that the most sophisticated reasoning can be caught up in the subtleties of social interaction.

Rock-paper-scissors revisited

In the experiment, Frey and Goldstone introduce a version of rock-paper-scissors they call "the mod game." In each round, they gave small groups of five or six IU psychology undergraduates a choice of numbers from 1 and 24. Participants earned money for picking a number exactly one greater than a number chosen by someone else, with the choices wrapped around in a circle so that 1 beat 24.

Each student had to anticipate what others were going to pick, and pick the next number up, keeping in mind that everyone else was thinking the same thing. In this game of one-upmanship, the best performers aren't the ones who think the most steps ahead, but the ones who think just the right number of steps ahead -- about two, as it turned out in the experiment.

Experimental economists predict that sufficiently experienced people will continually increase the number of steps by which they think ahead. But this did not happen in the mod game. Instead, when participants were shown each previous round's results, they tended to cluster in one part of the circle of choices and start bounding around it in sync. Groups produced a compelling periodic orbit around the choices, reminiscent of the cultural pendulum swinging back and forth, bringing, say, mustaches in and out of fashion.

The cycling behavior consistently got faster with time. With more experience, people learned to think further ahead, so the economic prediction was partly correct. But the increase was much less dramatic than economists might have thought: After 200 rounds of the mod game, the average number of thinking steps increased by only half a step, from 2 to 2.5. Moreover, the synchronicity that occurs in this game turned out to benefit everyone; a tighter grouping of choices meant a higher density of money to be earned in each round.

Oh I have. I am a Rays fan and go to games at Tropicana field when I can. They are bad too, but not near as bad as Red Sox fans. Sox fans in my experience have been nasty, obnoxious people. Many of them don't know anything about the team before 2004, and they go silent when I mention the 86 year drought

We have our own ways of rebutting Yankees. The only thing they hold onto is how many world series victories they have (it's always that "we" have, not that "the Yankees" have). As if they've done anything to win them. Whenever they bring that up, I just tell them that the Sox have more WS titles in the last decade, and mentioning the 2004 ALCS is always fun.

And no offense, but Tropicana Field is probably the gnarliest stadium in baseball. I respect the Rays, but people who say Fenway is a stinkhole (and it is, but it has history) have clearly never been to Tropicana.

Seagate Small Business Storage ? Business As Usual ? The Digital ...

We announced the Seagate Business Storage NAS today. If you missed the memo, here are some of the highlights:

  • Ideal for Small/Home offices, Remote/Mobile offices or small-to-medium type businesses
  • Small Business Storage provides centralized backup, data protection and remote access
  • Capacity size ranging from 2TB to 16TB.

While these features are similar to what we offer in our Wireless Plus and Seagate Central devices, obviously the use cases and needs are going to be vastly different. ?As I sat in product development meetings prior to the launch of this system, I often thought about the type of person who?d benefit from using the Small Business Storage. (You know, aside from the obvious small business owners.)

Because my social circles are so varied, I know a lot of people in the creative professional space who I think would benefit from such a device.

Photographers or video editors would benefit from such a device primarily for the capacity offered. 16TB will hold a lot of photos and videos and anyone who?s done this type of work knows how large the raw files can become.

Then there are musicians. Imagine a world where you work in a corporate 9-5 role by day, but by night you don your hip hop crime fighter tee and produce music and videos. Having a Small Business Storage device in your studio allows you to backup all your tracks and even play them remotely when you?re having that ?I?m abut to be discovered? moment.? And if you have accompanying videos, then it?s like having your own YouTube channel in your back pocket. (Though I guess you could just access YouTube, but at least this way you?d be ad free.)

So whether you?re a consultant, a retailer, an Internet mogul, an artist, a musician, a or even a budding web celebrity, the Small Business Storage will keep things business usual.

Overseas slice of 'Pi' flips Hollywood formula | CharlotteObserver.com

LOS ANGELES In mathematical terms, divide the circumference of the world by its diameter, and you have pi. In Hollywood terms, add a United Nations mix of ingredients and you have the blockbuster "Life of Pi."

With 11 Academy Awards nominations - second only to "Lincoln" with 12 - and the sort of global box-office receipts normally reserved for superheroes, "Life of Pi" is one of the most unusual megahits ever to hit the big-screen. Approaching $600 million at the box office worldwide, the film is by far the top-grosser among the nine best-picture nominees - with $200 million more than "Les Miserables" and "Django Unchained," its closest rivals.

"Life of Pi" has action, suspense and spectacle, but it's a thoughtful, contemplative, internalized film, a philosophical and even cryptic story that touched something in the worldwide psyche resulting in business in the realm of more traditional Hollywood hits such as "The Hunger Games," "Men in Black 3" and "Brave."

Though backed by 20th Century Fox, the film has an international sensibility that "Life of Pi" director Ang Lee hopes will gradually become part of everyday business in Hollywood, which has a long history of telling tales - even overseas ones - with an American perspective.

"It's a global movie culture. The mainstream cinematic language was largely set up by Hollywood, Americans, therefore it's American. Some European directors, but it was an American spirit," Lee said. "I think the film language that's established here, that's the biggest obstacle when you try to do something different. You know, the world views things differently. They have different life experiences."

As does the talent behind "Life of Pi." The film is based on the best-selling novel by Canadian author Yann Martel, a globe-trotting writer born in Spain.

Lee grew up in Taiwan, went to film school at New York University and has become one of Hollywood's most-eclectic filmmakers, turning his martial-arts epic "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" into a critical and commercial smash and winning the best-director Oscar for "Brokeback Mountain."

Along with Lee, who's up for best director and best picture as a producer on "Life of Pi," the film's Oscar-nominated collaborators include American screenwriter David Magee, Canadian composer Mychael Danna, Chilean cinematographer Claudio Miranda and Indian lyricist Bombay Jayashri, who sings the theme song, which she co-wrote with Danna. The film's largely Indian cast is led by newcomer Suraj Sharma as teenage Pi Patel and Irrfan Khan as adult Pi, with French superstar Gerard Depardieu and British actor Rafe Spall co-starring.

"Every big movie doesn't need to be American. This movie had virtually nothing American about it," said Gitesh Pandya, who runs the website Boxofficeguru.com. "The more we see examples of these unorthodox films with global settings that are actually making the cash registers ring, it's a step in the direction of trying to find more of them."

"Life of Pi" follows the spiritual journey of an Indian youth who creates his own multicultural, interdenominational world view by embracing Hindu, Islamic and Christian beliefs and practices. Pi Patel's faith is terribly tested after he's shipwrecked on a lifeboat with a Bengal tiger - the story offering an even more terrible narrative as Pi later relates an alternate version of his adventures.

Sounds like the stuff of an intriguing lower-budgeted arthouse film. But shot in 3-D with expensive computer animation to create a lifelike tiger and other creatures, "Pi" cost a whopping $120 million with no guarantee it could ever pay for itself. 20th Century Fox executives ultimately decided it had enough international appeal to justify the risk.

"I'd be kidding you to say that we knew it would reach these levels," said Jim Gianopulos, Fox studio chairman. "But it's a big, beautiful world out there, and when you deliver a film that has the strength of story, the emotionality, the spirituality and the spectacle of a film like 'Pi,' people show up."

Hollywood studios once counted on domestic audiences for most of a movie's revenue. But overseas markets have been Hollywood's growth area, with international audiences now accounting for two-thirds or more of receipts on many films.

The ratio is even higher on "Life of Pi," which has taken in a respectable $108.5 million domestically but a remarkable $460 million - four-fifths of its total - from overseas fans. That includes $90.8 million in China, $45.4 million in Great Britain, $29.9 million in Russia and $19.8 million in Mexico.

The film comes four years after "Slumdog Millionaire," another surprise smash about an Indian youth facing grave challenges. "Slumdog" took in $377 million worldwide and won the 2008 best-picture Oscar.

Two such films don't constitute a new wave of Hollywood openness to foreign flavors, though.

"Remember after the success of 'Slumdog,' there was a lot of talk of a lot more films like that set in similar locations, and it just didn't happen," said Nitin Govil, assistant professor at the University of Southern California's School of Cinematic Arts. "Anytime you get a success like this, there's an attempt to kind of genericize it. But the thing that makes these successful is that they're singular. Maybe not one-offs, but certainly not formulaic."

And Hollywood remains a formulaic place, with stories mostly reflecting American tastes.

There have been small steps toward diversity in characters and a broader world view in themes, thanks partly to inroads by such overseas directors as Lee, Peter Jackson, Alfonso Cuaron, Guillermo del Toro, John Woo and Neill Blonkamp.

"I don't see that as mainstream yet. Someday. The establishment is the establishment. The film grammar was established that way. Patterns. I think for the majority of films they make, they will still follow that. That's the formula. You have to respect that if you're serious about money," Lee said.

"It's just that I think they have to be more opened up to different types of filmmaking," added Lee, who figures the enormous business "Life of Pi" did overseas will help that along - a bit. "It's a gradual thing. It's not going to dramatically change anything. But just look at the number. You have to pay attention to it. The number of what the world did on this movie. The market in America didn't dwindle. It's everybody else in the world. They stood up. They did their share."

Israel's Netanyahu freezes $2,700 ice cream fund

Published: Feb 17, 2013 at 9:46 AM PST
JERUSALEM (AP) - Following an Israeli newspaper's scoop, the country's prime minister has "frozen" his annual ice cream budget.

Benjamin Netanyahu's office on Sunday said once he was made aware of the state-financed contract issued to purchase ice cream from his favorite Jerusalem parlor he ordered it stopped immediately. Netanyahu called the contract "excessive and unacceptable."

The Israel economic publication "Calcalist" published a list of items on the prime minister's annual expense budget, including $2,700 for ice cream.

Following the publication, Israelis flocked to the "Metudela" ice cream shop near the prime minister's residence to check out his alleged favorite flavors: pistachio and vanilla.

The prime minister's office said the cost included hosting high-ranking officials at the official residence. Still, it offered a rare peek into the personal life of the private Netanyahu.

Why Was No Prophecy Revealed About Ghana?s Oil Find To Owusu-Bempah But Only Doom

National Organizer of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), Yaw Boateng Gyan, has debunked claims that the leadership of the party has met with the Leader and Founder of the Glorious Word Ministry International, Rev. Isaac Owusu Bempah, over his ?death prophecy? about President John Mahama.

Rev. Owusu Bempah has been making the news headlines recently by courting controversy when he prophesied the likely death of President Mahama which according to him, if nothing is done by the President and his advisors to avert the calamity, will come to pass this year.

The prophecy stirred the passion of some religious leaders, political figures and the entire nation judging by the vehement registration of displeasure directed at the renowned man of God.

Following the disturbing revelation, some bigwigs of the ruling party were reported to have met with him (Owusu Bempah), under the cover of darkness, on how best to nullify the prophecy.

But Yaw Boateng Gyan, speaking on Okay FM, stridently denied the allegation.

He told Kwame Nkrumah ?Tikese?, host of the show that it is a palpable lie if anyone should claim that NDC gurus have clandestinely held a meeting with the man of God in a quest for solution to the danger hovering over the President?s head.

?I was thrown into a state of shock when I heard it. I don?t know the NDC leaders they are referring to,? he said.

He stressed that ?No NDC Executive has met with him?as I speak now, beginning from Dr. Kwabena Adjei to the Regional and constituency executives, I have not heard any of them say that they have had any consultation with the man of God.?

Reacting to the statement by the General Overseer of the World Miracle Church International, Bishop Charles Agyin-Asare on the issue, Yaw Boateng Gyan pointed out that he (Bishop Agyin-Asare) did not make any offensive remarks but rather only sought to advice Owusu-Bempah.

To him, Rev. Owusu Bempah should have consulted with his associate Pastors to pray for President Mahama but not to make a public declaration of the prophecy. He wondered why God only reveals things bordering on disaster to men of God.

?His church consists of NDC and NPP congregants. So, if you say something of this sort to your church members and as a man of God, you expect them to disseminate the information publicly to redeem souls. So, no prophecy was revealed about Ghana?s oil find other than those election and death prophecies?it appears God does not reveal to these men of God our prosperities. But is it just prophecies that spell doom that God gives to them? If it happens like this, it leaves some of us to think that they are Prophets of doom.? he said.

He advised Ghanaians to be wary of such prophecies.

?In this world, if God wants to help you; he won?t descend from above to help you. He works through human beings. The same way the devil works through human beings to destroy. So, let?s be watchful and desist from matters like this because it won?t help the nation,? Yaw Boateng.

Rugby Union: Edwards - Warriors defeat 'embarrassing'

Dragons coach Darren Edwards says his side must respond to their "embarrassing" 60-3 home defeat against Glasgow on Friday.

The Warriors trounced the Welsh region in the Pro 12 clash, scoring eight tries on their way to a record league win which was also the biggest winning margin for an away team in the competition's history.
Afterwards, Edwards admitted he was hurting and wants his side to bounce back as soon as possible.
"We're embarrassed, you can't hide away from the facts of that. I'm embarrassed because that was my team out there," he said.
"There's got to be a response from what happened here tonight and I'll be expecting that next week.
"Every game's going to be important that we can actually prove to ourselves and to our fans now what we're actually trying and striving hard to achieve."
Dragons, who took an early lead in the match before going down to the huge defeat, are second bottom of the table and meet bottom-side Zebra next on February 24.
Edwards could only apologise to the fans and vowed to do all he could to put things right.
He added: "It's a huge apology, it's an embarrassment. Nobody wants to be associated with that. I think it's important we're looking at the whole organisation and trying to put things in place.
"We'll take a harsh look at everything. We want to be successful and we'll do everything we can to do that.
"I've come from a professional playing background and I've just got to fight. All I'm thinking about is fighting to put that right now."

President Obama talks Caterpillar in State of the Union address

February 13, 2013 Updated Feb 13, 2013 at 8:40 PM CST

PEORIA, Ill. -- During his state of the union address Tuesday night, President Obama called out several companies for their efforts to bring jobs back to the United States.

The president applauded Caterpillar for moving jobs to the U.S. from Japan. More than a year ago Caterpillar announced plans to shift production from Japan to a new plant near Athens, Georgia.

Caterpillar is no stranger to Mr. Obama, he visited the East Peoria plant during his first term as President in February 2009.

Caterpillar Spokesman Jim Dugan says the company looks forward to working with the Obama administration on free trade policy.

"We stand ready, willing and able to work with the administration and Congress on efforts that might improve and strengthen manufacturing and strengthen the competitiveness of American Companies," Dugan said.

Dugan said last year, Caterpillar exported a record $23 billion in products from the United States.

Study finds possible link between diabetes and ... - Health.am

? Diabetes ? ? Heart ? Feb 16, 2013

Having diabetes doubles a person?s risk of dying after a heart attack, but the reason for the increased risk is not clear. A new University of Iowa study suggests the link may lie in the over-activation of an important heart enzyme, which leads to death of pacemaker cells in the heart, abnormal heart rhythm, and increased risk of sudden death in diabetic mice following a heart attack.

?Many studies have shown that patients with diabetes are at especially high risk for dying from a myocardial infarction (heart attack). Our study provides new evidence that this excess mortality could involve a pathway where oxidized CaMKII enzyme plays a central role,? says Mark Anderson, M.D., Ph.D., UI professor and chair and executive office of internal medicine, and senior author of the study published Feb. 15 in the Journal of Clinical Investigation.

Diabetes affects more than 8 percent of the U.S. population, and heart attack is the most common cause of death in people with diabetes. Diabetes also causes increased oxidative stress ? a rise in the level of so-called reactive oxygen species (ROS) that can be damaging to cells.

In 2008, Anderson?s lab showed that CaMKII (calcium/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II) is activated by oxidation. The new study links oxidative stress caused by diabetes to increased death risk after a heart attack through the oxidation-based activation of the CaMKII enzyme.

"Our findings suggest that oxidized CaMKII may be a ?diabetic factor? that is responsible for the increased risk of death among patients with diabetes following a heart attack,? says lead study author Min Luo, D.O., Ph.D., a cardiology fellow in the UI Department of Internal Medicine.

Luo and her colleagues used a mouse model of diabetes to probe the link between the disease and an increased risk of death from heart attack.

The study showed that heart rates in the diabetic mice slowed dramatically and, like humans with diabetes, the mice had double the death rate after a heart attack compared to non-diabetic mice.

Evidence from the diabetic mice suggested that the excess deaths following heart attack was due to heart rhythm abnormalities, prompting the team to investigate the heart?s pacemaker cells, which control heart rate.

Looking at the diabetic mice, the team found that pacemaker cells had elevated levels of oxidized CaMKII enzyme and more cell death than pacemaker cells in non-diabetic mice. The levels of oxidation and cell death were further increased in the diabetic mice following a heart attack.

When the team blocked oxidation-based activation of the enzyme, fewer pacemaker cells died, and the diabetic mice maintained normal heart rates and were protected from the increased death risk following a heart attack.

The findings suggest that preventing or reducing activation of the CaMKII enzyme in specific heart cells may represent a new approach for reducing the risk of death due to heart attack in patients with diabetes.

###

In addition to Luo and Anderson, who also is director of the UI Cardiovascular Research Center, the team included UI researchers in internal medicine and obstetrics and gynecology, and researchers from Washington University, St. Louis, Mo; The Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio; and University of Goettingen in Germany.

The research was supported in part by grants from the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute and from the Fondation Leducq.
