'G.I. Joe' commands No. 1 at box office with $41M

(AP) ? After a nine-month delay, "G.I. Joe: Retaliation" deployed to the top spot at the box office.

The action film starring Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Bruce Willis and Channing Tatum as the gun-toting military toys brought to life marched into the No. 1 position at the weekend box office, earning $41.2 million, according to studio estimates Sunday. "Retaliation" opened Wednesday at midnight, which helped bring its domestic total to $51.7 million.

Paramount postponed the sequel to 2009's "G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra" last May from its original June opening date to convert the film to 3-D. The last-minute switcheroo came just weeks after "Battleship," another movie based on a Hasbro toy, sank at the box office. At that time, Paramount already began its advertising campaign for "Retaliation."

"It certainly vindicates the decision," said Don Harris, the studio's head of distribution. "Any time you make those sorts of moves, people always assume the worst. The truth is I'd seen this movie a long time ago in 2-D, and the movie worked in 2-D. It's not trying to be 'Schindler's List.' This movie is intended to be enjoyed as a big, action spectacle."

After debuting in the top spot last weekend, the 3-D animated prehistoric comedy "The Croods" from DreamWorks Animation and 20th Century Fox slipped to the No. 2 spot with $26.5 million in its second weekend. The film features the voices of Nicolas Cage, Emma Stone and Catherine Keener as a cave family on the hunt for a new home.

Among the other new films this weekend, "Tyler Perry's Temptation" starring Jurnee Smollett-Bell and Lance Gross opened above expectations at No. 3 with $22.3 million, while the sci-fi adaptation "The Host" featuring Saoirse Ronan, Max Irons, and Jake Abel as characters from the Stephenie Meyer novel landed at No. 6 in its debut weekend with a modest $11 million.

Overall, the weekend box office was on par with last year when "The Hunger Games" continued to dominate in its second weekend of release with $58.5 million. After a slow start, Hollywood's year-to-date revenues are still 12 percent behind last year, heading into next month when summer movie season unofficially kicks off with "Iron Man 3" on May 3.

"It's getting us back on track after many weekends of down trending box office," said Paul Dergarabedian, box office analyst for Hollywood.com. "Last weekend was a turning point with the strength of 'The Croods' and 'Olympus Has Fallen' doing better than expected. We're heading toward the summer movie season on solid footing. It's been a tough year so far."

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Hollywood.com. Where available, latest international numbers are included. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.

1. "G.I. Joe: Retaliation" $41.2 million.

2. "The Croods," $26.5 million.

3. "Tyler Perry's Temptation," $22.3 million.

4. "Olympus Has Fallen," $14 million.

5. "Oz the Great and Powerful," $11.6 million.

6. "The Host," $11 million.

7. "The Call," $4.8 million.

8. "Admission," $3.2 million.

9. "Spring Breakers," $2.7 million.

10. "The Incredible Burt Wonderstone," $1.3 million.

Congressional Inaction Could Cost College Students

(Reuters) - Rory McIlroy, playing for the first time since losing his world number one ranking earlier this week, got off to a shaky start at the Houston Open on Thursday where he dropped three shots over his opening eight holes. The 23-year-old Northern Irishman, who was replaced atop the world rankings by Tiger Woods this week, struggled to find his rhythm on an ideal day for low scoring at the Redstone Golf Club in Humble, Texas. He bogeyed the par-four second hole and made a double-bogey seven on the eighth hole to limp to the turn at three-over. ...

Parkinson's disease protein gums up garbage disposal system in cells

Friday, March 29, 2013

Clumps of ?-synuclein protein in nerve cells are hallmarks of many degenerative brain diseases, most notably Parkinson's disease.

"No one has been able to determine if Lewy bodies and Lewy neurites, hallmark pathologies in Parkinson's disease can be degraded," says Virginia Lee, PhD, director of the Center for Neurodegenerative Disease Research, at the Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania.

"With the new neuron model system of Parkinson's disease pathologies our lab has developed recently, we demonstrated that these aberrant clumps in cells resist degradation as well as impair the function of the macroautophagy system, one of the major garbage disposal systems within the cell."

Macroautophagy, literally self eating, is the degradation of unnecessary or dysfunctional cellular bits and pieces by a compartment in the cell called the lysosome.

Lee, also a professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, and colleagues published their results in the early online edition of the Journal of Biological Chemistry this week.

Alpha-synuclein (?-syn ) diseases all have clumps of the protein and include Parkinson's disease (PD), and array of related disorders: PD with dementia , dementia with Lewy bodies, and multiple system atrophy. In most of these, ?-syn forms insoluble aggregates of stringy fibrils that accumulate in the cell body and extensions of neurons.

These unwanted ?-syn clumps are modified by abnormal attachments of many phosphate chemical groups as well as by the protein ubiquitin, a molecular tag for degradation. They are widely distributed in the central nervous system, where they are associated with neuron loss.

Using cell models in which intracellular ?-syn clumps accumulate after taking up synthetic ?-syn fibrils, the team showed that ?-syn inclusions cannot be degraded, even though they are located near the lysosome and the proteasome, another type of garbage disposal in the cell.

The ?-syn aggregates persist even after soluble ?-syn levels within the cell are substantially reduced, suggesting that once formed, the ?-syn inclusions are resistant to being cleared. What's more, they found that ?-syn aggregates impair the overall autophagy degradative process by delaying the maturation of autophagy machines known as autophagosomes, which may contribute to the increased cell death seen in clump-filled nerve cells. Understanding the impact of ?-syn aggregates on autophagy may help elucidate therapies for ?-syn-related neurodegeneration.

BMW announces compatibility with four new iOS apps, removable incar LTE router, we go handson

At this year's New York International Auto Show BMW is expanding its portfolio of connected apps -- by four. The company announced iOS integration for Audible, Glympse, Rhapsody and TuneIn Radio and we couldn't help but swing by to check them all out. This integration (which also will work on Connected Minis) entails an update to those existing iOS apps. In other words, you won't need a dedicated BMW app nor second versions of these individual apps. You can use the ones you already know and love.

Join us below for a little more information on how that works, and a look at the company's in-car LTE router that's also on display.

White House Hosts 'Yoga Garden' Once Again for 135th Easter Egg ...

White House Easter Yoga 2011

White House Yoga Garden 2011

In line with First Lady Michelle Obama?s mission to reduce childhood obesity and, according to conspiracy theorists,?the administration?s mission to turn us all into pacified meditation loving hippie liberals, the traditional White House Easter Egg Roll shall once again include a ?Yoga Garden.? Go, go bunny pose.

This year?s theme is ?Be Healthy, Be Active, Be You!? which sounds a lot like no chocolate bunnies or Cadbury Cremes this year, kiddies. Instead it will be a day of healthy eating workshops, yoga and fitness activities like obstacle courses, basketball and tennis with celebs like the?NFL?s Anquan Boldin and Adrian Peterson as well as NASCAR?s Danica Patrick. Or as FOX news put it, ?a ?fat camp? to inflict exercise and the First Lady?s ?Let?s Move!? healthy meal plans on kids who just want to celebrate the season on the South Lawn.? Sigh. Though, really, this can?t come as too much of a surprise considering 2012?s theme was??Let?s Go, Let?s Play, Let?s Move? and 2011?s was ?Get Up and Go,? all part of the FLOTUS?s Let?s Move campaign?s message.

We?re happy yoga is once again part of the healthy activities again this year because kids yoga is awesome.

The 135th annual White House Easter Egg Roll will happen on?Monday April 1, 2013, when more than 35,000 people will descend on the South Lawn.?Here?s your official invitation from Kid President, even though tickets are already sold out so, sorry, you can?t go. You can however likely watch the festivities online via the White House webcam come Monday.

How Often do You Shut Down Your Computer?

How Often do You Shut Down Your Computer?People have all kinds of different reasons for shutting down their computers. We'd like to know how often you do it.

Some of you shut down your computer regularly to save energy and we certainly can't argue with that. Some shut their computers down because they feel like leaving it on all the time is bad for the computer. That one is debatable?there's not really any evidence to show you can extend the life of a computer by turning it off regularly. And for some, it's just a personal choice. To be sure, there are pros and cons both to shutting down regularly and to leaving a computer running all the time.

So, we'd like to know:

MMA Marketplace: The UFC 158 walkout shirts

It's time to look at the UFC 158 main event in the most important aspect: the walkout shirts. Looking at the shirts of Nick Diaz and Georges St-Pierre, who has the edge?

Both the contender and the champion have black shirts that have an MMA design that doesn't look all that different than ones we've seen before. Diaz's shirt says where he's from, the 209, and what he's hoping to accomplish, which is world domination. GSP's is just GSP's. Nothing too exciting. Between that, and the ridiculous price of $57.99, Diaz is the winner in a tight decision.

Get Diaz's shirt for $23.99 here, and GSP's here for wayyyyy too much money.

Facts About Colorectal Cancer - Health - Nairaland

Facts About Colorectal Cancer by Jarus(m): 1:17pm On Mar 13Death by cancer is now very common today. I think it is high time we all made a habit reading and knowing about various health issues - who knows, you may be the one that will identify a symptom and ask a known person to visit his doctor.

Of course, not being doctors or health practitioners, we are not licensed to and must never claim diagnosis of any health challenge, but I think it is high time everyone knew something about health. Subscribing to reliable health journals or sites may be of help.

2 years ago, I overheard a friend talk to his brother on phone, that their sick mum had blood in her stool. From my basic health knowledge, I almost asked them to go see a gastroeneterolgist for colon cancer screening for the sick mum. I didn't do, because I didn't want to interfere in their family affairs. The mum died few months later, most likely from colorectal cancer (but pls, not all cases are blood-in-stool are colorectal cancers o. It can be less severe cases like pile/heamorrage but in any case, see your doctor asap whe you notice one. Colonoscopy may be required to ascertain, esp when it is persistent)

This article, which I sourced from medhelp.org, one of the health sites I subscriibed to, takes us through colorectal cancer - causes, symptoms, treatment options etc.

Re: Facts About Colorectal Cancer by Jarus(m): 1:19pm On Mar 131, Why Awareness is the Key

Cancer never sounds good. Pair the word "cancer" with it, and any body part seems tainted and taboo. So it's no surprise that people don't like talking about colorectal cancer, even if it is the third most common cancer and the third leading cause of cancer deaths in both men and women in the U.S. It's not pleasant or pretty, but a little extra awareness might make colorectal cancer a lot less dangerous. Read on to know the signs, symptoms, and how to reduce your risk

2, Basic Terminology

First, a quick definition to clear up confusion: Colon cancer and colorectal cancer aren't quite synonymous, though people often use the terms interchangeably. Your colon is the biggest part of your large intestine, making up the first four to five feet, and the rectum is the last several inches. Colon cancer and rectal cancer behave very similarly, though colon cancer is diagnosed more than twice as often as rectal cancer; the term colorectal cancer effectively combines the two. Treatment varies based on the location of the initial (called primary) tumor, so it's important to know the difference.

3, The Root of the Problem

About 95 percent of colorectal cancers start with a polyp, which are benign, slow-growing clusters of cells that grow on the intestinal wall and usually have a mushroom-like appearance. Polyps are common - about 30 to 40 percent of adults 50 and older develop them - and usually harmless - most polyps won't ever turn into cancer. However, because polyps often develop without causing any symptoms, colorectal cancer screening is a crucial part of your regular medical exam if you're age 50 or older.

4, When a Polyp Goes Rogue

Of the three types of colon polyps, only one, called adenomatous polyps, or adenomas, can turn into cancer. However, adenomas are the most common type, comprising about two-thirds of colon polyps. Fortunately, adenomas grow very slowly, and not all adenomas turn cancerous. If they do, they usually take more than 10 years to become malignant, giving you ample time to catch and remove them, which makes colorectal cancer highly preventable with routine colorectal cancer screening.

5, Other Causes

Polyps are the most common precursor to colon cancer, but they're not the only ones. Nonpolypous lesions, which are harder to detect than polyps, can also grow into cancer cells. At least in the case of colon cancer, these inconspicuous cells are far more rare than polyps.

Re: Facts About Colorectal Cancer by Jarus(m): 1:19pm On Mar 136, Problems from Polyps

If polyps do evolve into cancer cells, you may start to notice some symptoms. While stomach cramps, persistent gas, fatigue or noticeable changes in your bowel movements and blood in your stool don't sound like "good news" you should consider yourself fortunate to catch symptoms early. Symptoms can be rare, and they're your doctor's best chance to diagnose you early and start a simpler course of treatment.

7, When to Watch Your Risk

After your 50th birthday, it's time to be on the lookout. About 90 percent of all people with colorectal cancer are over 50. While African-Americans are at a higher risk, this cancer doesn't discriminate; everyone ages 50 and up needs regular colorectal cancer screening tests.

8, Know Your History

If your family has a history of polyps, then you're more likely to develop them, but no one's sure why. And if you've already had polyps or colon cancer yourself, you're always at risk of them returning. Additionally, if you've had intestinal trouble in the past, like inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis, be on high alert for colorectal cancer

9, Is It in the Genes

Colorectal cancer isn't necessarily passed down from parents to children, but some genetic markers can indicate risk and let you know that you need to be more vigilant. Genetic predisposition only shows up in a small percentage of colorectal cancer cases and does not guarantee that you'll develop the disease. If risk runs in your family, you'll need earlier and more frequent screenings; talk to your doctor about when to start.

10, Polyp Probability

Gardner's Syndrome or familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP), is a rare diagnosis that means you're genetically inclined to develop polyps. FAP boosts your risk of developing colon cancer before you're 40 years old, so your doctor will start examining for polyps early - and regularly.

Re: Facts About Colorectal Cancer by Jarus(m): 1:20pm On Mar 1311, Rare, But Challenging

Lynch Syndrome, or hereditary nonpolypous colorectal cancer (HNPCC), another rare genetic disorder, causes potentially malignant lesions that are hard to find, putting you at risk of colon cancer before age 50. A genetic test can alert you and your doctor so you can start testing early.

12, Does Diet Make a Difference?

The final verdict isn't in yet, but studies indicate that diet and exercise can influence colorectal cancer risk. If you maintain a high-fat, low-fiber diet, your digestive system has to deal with carcinogens and other potential poisons. If you're smoking and abusing alcohol, all while avoiding exercise, then your weakened body makes a better host for cancer cells. A lifetime of burgers and beers may not cause colorectal cancer, but bad habits will exploit your other risk factors.

13, Deal with the Tests

Don't ignore the public service announcements and celebrity awareness campaigns: You need regular screening starting at age 50 (earlier with a family history and other risk factors). Testing isn't a pretty topic, but the technology is improving, and getting past the queasiness can, quite simply, save your life.

14, Simplest Surgeries

Surgery is usually the safest and most effective way to treat colon cancer. That's why early detection is so important - surgery is far safer and more effective in the early stages of cancer. If the polyps are small and haven't spread or embedded themselves in the wall of the colon, then a surgeon can usually remove them completely. You'll have to keep a more watchful eye for the rest of your life, but your immediate treatment can be that simple. Surgeons can even remove larger polyps - caught early - through less

15, Tougher Treatments

If malignant cells have grown into the colon wall, then you may need a partial colectomy, in which a surgeon will remove the cancerous portion and reconnect the healthy colon. But this is also where rectal cancer becomes a different problem. If the cancerous cells are too close to the rectum or end of your colon, you may need a colostomy. Often, surgeons can perform a temporary colostomy, but in some advanced cases, you'll need an external colostomy bag for collecting body waste outside the

Re: Facts About Colorectal Cancer by Jarus(m): 1:22pm On Mar 1316, When It's Incurable

Since many people with colorectal cancer are also in bad physical health, sometimes surgeons aren't able to remove enough of the colon to get rid of all of the cancer cells. In these cases, they'll operate to remove any blockages in the intestines, which will relieve symptoms like bleeding and pain. But this palliative surgery won't cure the cancer.

17, Chemotherapy and Radiation

If, after surgery, some cancer cells remain, you may need chemotherapy to destroy these cells. And if the cancer has spread from your colon to nearby organs like the liver, chemotherapy may be able to kill these cells before they cause complications. With rectal cancer, you'll likely need radiation therapy to eliminate any remaining cells and shrink any tumors.

Recent studies have shown that radiation prior to surgery helps shrink the tumor and

18, Do Drugs Help?

Targeted drug therapy, including chemotherapy drugs like bevacizumab (Avastin), cetuximab (Erbitux) and panitumumab (Vectibix) can help if surgery isn't an option. These drugs have varied success, and come with the typical side effects of cancer drugs, from nausea, diarrhea and abdominal pain to stroke or heart attack symptoms. You and your doctor will carefully weigh the risks and potential benefits before starting a drug regimen

19, Help from Healthy Habits

You can prevent colon cancer by catching polyps early, but can you prevent polyps? It might be impossible, but some healthy habits can help:
?Diet: A colorectal cancer-fighting diet of fruits, vegetables and whole grains will supply your body with the fiber and antioxidants you need to keep your digestive system clean.
?Exercise: Exercising and maintaining a healthy BMI not only keep your system

This post has been hiddenRe: Facts About Colorectal Cancer by pappilo(m): 5:49pm On Mar 13Thanks for this but unfortunately many wont read it and those who do will just glance through. A year ago I would have just glanced at this article and moved on but when these things hit close to home there is the natural tendency to develop an interest but unfortunately the knowledge gained from that interest is usually of no important use as the close relative or yourself is past the curative stage.

The ultimate killer in Colorectal cancer is Liver Metastasis i.e when the cancer cells have travelled from the colon to the liver. At this stage, there is no chance of a cure and only palliative treatment can be given to help prolong life often with a deteriorating quality of life.

Like the article you posted above alludes to, colorectal cancer presents no obvious symptoms and by the time it does e.g rapid unexplained weight loss, the cancer has advanced to stage IV which is incurable.

If I knew what I know now 10 years ago, I would have done things differently.

I love you dad.

Great post really..I only wanna reiterate on d most important words,'Early detection'.Sincerely, early detection is what differentiates Western approach 2 cancer frm dt f Africa cos most Africans won't show up in d hospitals till d disease has eaten really deep.Pitifully, this is largely as a result of lack of routine check-ups in Africa However, those who do show up early, mostly do so either in herbal homes or in not-well-exposed hospitals, where they r only given antibiotics 4 trx.There4,1 can't seperate cancer prevailence from ignorance. What a pity!

Once a year check up wit Scans, Barium enemas n colonoscopy (if available ) is recommended after the age of 50.
A healthy lifestyle is very important, with Gods Grace..

Re: Facts About Colorectal Cancer by Lady Winona: 6:46am

Hmmm, during my elective posting in USA, most of my adult patients had colorectal cancer. As a newbie, my job was to perform a guaiac test on their stools which essentially means checking for blood in stool as one of the diagnostic tools. It was rather fun. Again, one of the lines of management was that these patients were adviced to maintain a diet high in fiber. The consultant had gone on to explain that why the disease is rare in Africans is because of the high fiber content in our foods eg garri etc as compared to their diet that is largely made up of refined food products low in fiber aka junk food etc. The food companies in response are now increasing as well as adding fiber content in their biscuits, and other food products to keep up d health trend . Can it be d same as our natural food? I really doubt it.
Needless to say, I took home something that day which is to eat as much garri as I can even though I can barely stand the meal, since after all it's my prophylaxis against this dreadful disease.

'Devastating' Impact On Muslim Communities - Yeshiva World News

nypdaPolice surveillance of the city?s Muslims has had a ?chilling effect? on their lives, Muslim activists and their supporters said Monday.

They responded at a news conference outside New York Police Department headquarters to police claims that the counterterrorism tactics were harmless.

The Muslim American Civil Liberties Coalition and its partners interviewed Muslims around the city and found that many feel they can?t trust anybody, even while praying, and are afraid to participate in social and political activities.

The surveillance has had ?a profound chilling effect on First Amendment-protected speech and worship? at mosques and on campuses, said City Councilman Brad Lander, who joined the news conference and whose constituents include Muslims.

The two entities that worked with the coalition were the Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund and the Creating Law Enforcement Accountability & Responsibility, or CLEAR, project of the City University of New York School of Law.

NYPD? surveillance ?has stifled speech, communal life and religious practice and criminalized a broad segment of American Muslims,? fund attorney Nermeen Arastu said.

The surveillance was the subject of a series of stories by The Associated Press that revealed the NYPD intelligence division infiltrated dozens of mosques and Muslim student groups and investigated hundreds.

Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly has defended the tactics, saying officers observed legal guidelines.

Mineral riches at stake in Greenland vote

(AP) ? Greenland's underground wealth is at the forefront of the Arctic island's parliamentary election on Tuesday amid worries over a potential influx of Chinese labor and the environmental consequences of mining.

Once an isolated outpost of human civilization, ice-capped Greenland has grabbed global attention recently for being at the front line of climate change. Scientists are studying the melting of its massive ice sheet, which covers 80 percent of the island, and its impact on raising global sea levels ? one of the great unknowns of the climate puzzle.

Meanwhile, miners prepare to dig for iron, rare earths and other metals as warming temperatures make them more accessible.

All major parties in the 31-seat Parliament favor exploiting some of the untapped natural resources as a way to reduce Greenland's dependence on former colonial master Denmark and pave the way toward full independence.

But at what cost to the pristine environment and the traditional Inuit way of life?

The opposition Siumut party has accused Premier Kuupik Kleist of moving too fast, saying he rushed through a law in December to allow large mining projects to import labor from abroad, including China.

While a majority of Greenland's 57,000 residents are concentrated in a few small cities on the west coast, others live in remote coastal settlements where life revolves around fishing and hunting of seals and whales. Few have the skills required to work in the mining industry.

"People must be allowed to ask questions: What could the creation of a mine and the arrival of some 3,000 Chinese workers mean to me as an inhabitant of a hamlet? What will it mean to me and my hunting grounds?" Siumut leader Aleqa Hammond told The Associated Press.

Britain-based London Mining is seeking Chinese investments ? which would likely also mean Chinese workers ? for an iron mine 100 miles (160 kilometers) northeast of Nuuk, the capital. The company expects to extract 15 million tons of iron ore annually for at least 15 years.

Outsiders, including the European Union, are concerned that China is eyeing investments in Greenland as a way to gain a toehold in the resource-rich Arctic region.

Kleist, 54, said earlier this year that Greenland, which isn't an EU member, is "open for investments from the whole world," as long as investors follow local laws and regulations. Greenland officials traveled to both China and South Korea last year and Kleist also met with South Korea's president in Greenland.

Australian mining company Greenland Minerals and Energy Ltd. says it's in talks with potential investors from South Korea and elsewhere to develop a rare earths mine near Narsaq, on Greenland's southern tip. Rare earth elements are key ingredients in smartphones, weapons systems and other modern technologies.

The company says it's the biggest rare-earths deposit outside China, which accounts for more than 90 percent of global production, but the deposit can't be exploited unless Greenland lifts its ban on mining for radioactive elements, because the ore also contains uranium.

While other parties are ready to drop the ban, Kleist's governing Inuit Ataqatigiit party, or IA, wants to keep it ? at least until the environmental consequences of uranium mining have been thoroughly assessed.

"No matter how 'well behaved' a mining company is, it cannot take away the fact that the tailings from radioactive materials linger in nature for hundreds of thousands of years and the problem with the leftover materials from the usage of uranium has not been solved," IA lawmaker Naaja Nathanielsen said in an email.

A decision on whether to lift the ban, which would also require a vote in Denmark's Parliament, is expected this year or next.

A poll commissioned by the Sermitsiaq newspaper last week showed the election is too close to call. The poll of 800 people by HS Analyse found Kleist's left-leaning IA remained Greenland's largest party with more than 40 percent support. But its two coalition allies had lost backing, leaving it unclear whether the three parties together can retain a majority in Parliament.

Greenland's autonomy was expanded four years ago, giving the local government control over the island's natural resources. As part of that deal, Denmark will gradually reduce its 3.3 billion kroner ($576 million) annual subsidy once Greenland starts making profits from resource extraction. Right now the subsidy accounts for about two-thirds of Greenland's economy.

Offshore drilling in Greenlandic waters has so far not revealed any commercial quantities of oil and gas, so the self-rule government has placed its hopes on mining in the short term.

John Mair, executive director of Greenland Minerals and Energy, said political support for the company's rare earths plans is growing, but added that "clarity on regulation" is needed to go forward in Greenland. "Otherwise the investment tends to move to jurisdictions where there is a clearer path."

Politicians look for credit in a rising economy

When it comes to the economy, presidents usually get the rap for downturns and reap benefits from upturns. WASHINGTON (AP) ? Increased hiring, lower unemployment, stock market on the rise. Who gets the credit?

It's a hotly debated point in Washington, where political scorekeeping amounts to who gets blame and who gets praise.

Following Friday's strong jobs report ? 236,000 new jobs and unemployment dropping to a four-year low of 7.7 percent ? partisans hurriedly staked out turf.

"Woot woot!" tweeted former White House economic adviser Austan Goolsbee. "With 12 million still unemployed?" countered Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell's spokesman, Don Stewart.

Presidents usually get the rap for economic downturns and reap benefits when things improve. But the main factors affecting the current recovery and the record activity in the stock market may have less to do with high-profile fiscal policy fights in Washington than they do in the decisions of the Federal Reserve Bank, which has pumped trillions of dollars into the economy, kept interests rates at near zero and pushed investors away from low-yield bonds to stocks.

"From a policy standpoint, this is being driven primarily by the Fed," said Mark Vitner, an economist at Wells Fargo.

Yet to some, Washington deserves little recognition.

"Economies recover," said Douglas Holtz-Eakin, a former director of the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office and now head of the American Action Forum, a conservative public policy institute. He acknowledged the Fed's monetary policies halted the initial free fall by the financial industry, but he said the economy has had to catch up to the Fed's low interest rates.

"It took a long time for the housing market for them to matter and for the auto market for them to matter," Holtz-Eakin said. "So I don't think that's a policy victory."

If Democrats are eager to give President Barack Obama acclaim for spurring the recovery with an infusion of spending in 2009, there are just as many Republicans who will claim his health care law and his regulatory regimes slowed it.

If there is common ground among economists, it is that the next step in fiscal policy should be focused on reining in long-term spending on entitlements programs, particularly Medicare, instead of continuing debates over short-term spending. But such a grand bargain has been elusive, caught in a fight over Obama's desire for more tax revenue and Republican opposition to more tax increases.

Obama and some Republicans are trying to move the process with phone calls and a dinner here and a luncheon there. Next week, the president plans to address Democrats and Republicans in the House and Senate in separate meetings to see, as he put it Saturday in his weekly radio and Internet address, "if we can untangle some of the gridlock."

Who gets credit does have political consequences. A strong economy would create more space for Obama to pursue other aspects of his second-term agenda. But it's an important question for the long term, too, because if the recovery is indeed accelerating it could validate the policies that the Obama administration and the Fed put in place.

Hiring has been boosted by high corporate profits and by strength in the housing, auto, manufacturing and construction sectors. Corporate profits are up. Still, it might be too soon to declare victory. While the recovery may be getting traction, the U.S. economy is not yet strong.

Economic growth is forecast to be a modest 2 percent this year. Unemployment, even as it drops, remains high nearly four years after the end of the Great Recession, with roughly 12 million people out of work.

Last year's early months also showed strong job gains only to see them fade by June.

March could prove to be a more telling indicator as the economy responds to a third month of higher Social Security taxes and as across-the-board spending cuts that kicked in March 1 begin to work their way through government programs. Economists say anticipation of the cuts already caused a downturn in the fourth quarter of last year as the defense industry slowed spending. The Congressional Budget Office and some private forecasters say the coming cuts could reduce economic growth by about half a percentage point and cost about 700,000 jobs by the end of 2014.

"My view is that aggressive monetary and fiscal policy response to the recovery has been a net positive," said Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody's Analytics.

But referring to the automatic cuts, he said, "Fiscal policies have turned from a very powerful tailwind to a pretty significant head wind." And, he added, "the economy is going to be tested again in the next few months."

Obama has been distancing himself from the potential consequences of the automatic cuts, even though he signed the legislation that put them in place. Initially, they were designed to be so onerous that it would force all sides to work out a long-term deficit-reduction and debt-stabilization package. But that agreement never materialized.

If the recovery has been slow, White House officials argue, it is because Republicans have been unwilling to yield to Obama's demands for deficit reduction that combines tax increases and cuts in spending.

Obama himself seemed to touch on that viewpoint in his weekly address.

"At a time when our businesses are gaining a little more traction, the last thing we should do is allow Washington politics to get in the way," he said while heralding good economic news. "You deserve better than the same political gridlock and refusal to compromise that has too often passed for serious debate over the last few years."

Vitner, the Wells Fargo economist, argues that if anyone deserves credit for the recovery, it is the American public and American businesses "for being able to tune out all the noise that's coming from Washington."

"It's remarkable," he said, "that in the face of so much political uncertainty we've been able to see the growth that we have."

Pro-casino Rob Ford not backing a location yet

Mayor Rob Ford
Mayor Rob Ford speaks to reporters at Toronto City Hall on Thursday. (DON PEAT/Toronto Sun)

Report an error

TORONTO?-?

Mayor Rob Ford says he?s willing to bet on a Toronto casino if it will pay off for the city.

While Ford said he?s yet to see a city staff report expected soon on the pros and cons of a casino, he doubted he?ll fight against a resort coming to Toronto.

?If there is a proposal that can create 10,000 jobs ? good-paying, union jobs ? and bring in revenue of $150 million to $200 million a year, I am going to support it,? Ford said.

But Ford said he?s not ready to bet on where a casino will go.

?Where we?re going to support it, with what proposal, I?m not sure right now,? he said.

Casino critic Councillor Adam Vaughan said staff ?have no business case? for a Toronto casino.

?(Ford?s) subway report had better numbers than this project,? Vaughan said. ?The numbers aren?t real and staff are afraid to go to council with bad numbers because the numbers are atrocious.?

Vaughan argued the numbers Ford touts ?aren?t supported by the very studies he claims to have read.?

?Show me one single study that shows $200 million (in revenue for the city) ... there isn?t one,? he said.

?The mayor may be able to get away with making up numbers and pulling them out of his hat but staff have professional reputations and will actually get scrutinized.?

Councillor Doug Ford stressed a casino could be good for the city.

?Every penny should go to transit, should be there for building subways,? Councillor Ford said.

Asked if he?s concerned about a casino at Exhibition Place hurting existing events like the Canadian National Exhibition, he said that?s a different debate.

?There?s two different scenarios ? let?s differentiate between location and should we have a casino,? he said. ?Let?s get over the casino hump and then we?ll fight it out over the location.?

Should the city consider a casino at Exhibition Place?

Sourcing For Automobiles To Sell In Ebay Auto Auctions: 2

Selling high-priced items such as ebay automobile auctions is acquiring more and far more popular these days. In fact like i said, according to ebay motors jump button, a car is sold really 10 seconds, a car element or accessories is sold each second. More than ten million shoppers go to ebay motors every single month seeking to buy cars or auto components.

The purpose why ebay automobile auctions are well-known among ebay sellers is quite clear since the profits per sale are higher. You only need to have to sell 1 to two vehicles on ebay motors each month to make a handsome profit.

So how do you discover cars to sell on ebay motors? Generally I have utilized two techniques.

Automobile Dealers

Believe it or not, there are still a lot of vehicle dealers who are nonetheless advertising offline via the usual marketing techniques such as advertising in automobile magazines, posters, tv and radio.

From my individual knowledge, the principal purpose why these auto dealers do not sell on ebay motors is not simply because they do not know about ebay. It is because they do not have technical expertise of uploading photos, placing auction description and such. One particular vehicle dealer I know of have not touched a personal computer in his life!

So this is where you can come in and supply your solutions and in return if the automobile is sold successfully on ebay motors, you get a commission. I dont need to tell you even if it is a just two % commission, you could nevertheless get a few hundred dollars effortlessly.

Classified Advertisements

If you flip by way of your every day newspapers, you can most likely locate a lot of individuals trying to sell their cars in the classified ads section. Some of these individuals have been advertising for very a while which could mean they did not handle to sell their vehicles.

You could make contact with them and supply to sell their vehicle. Since they could not sell their automobile, it need to not be too difficult to convince them to give you a shot at selling it. In return, you arrange with the automobile owner to acquire a tiny commission for your operate.

The above 2 techniques have worked properly for me. The great factor about each approaches is you get to choose which cars you want to sell particularly for classified advertisements. If you have been on ebay motors for a although, you will recognize specific sorts of vehicles sell better and far more easily than others. Examples are classic or vintage automobiles. Fundamentally cars that are rare or unusual.

A single factor you have to note is most auto dealers will probably not give you a exclusive time period to sell the auto. As a result in your auction, always state the vehicle is on sale on other websites or other ways and that you reserve the appropriate to finish the auction early.
